Wishing to provide a theater that will continue to
present performing arts of the highest quality

Nissay Culture Foundation engages in activities for the purpose of “presenting performing arts of the highest quality and striving to improve those arts while contributing to the advancement of Japan’s performing arts and culture” centering on the Nissay Theatre. This is based on the passion of Gen Hirose, who was the President of Nippon Life Insurance Company, at the time of opening of the Nissay Theatre. He wished to “contribute to creating a healthy and culturally vibrant society that would serve as the foundation of the life insurance business” and to “provide a theater that would guide the future life of youth.” More than half a century has passed since the opening of the Nissay Theatre, and throughout, we have endeavored to stage high-quality performing arts while upholding three principles, “advancement of the performing arts,” “development of youth,” and “development of personnel who support the performing arts.”

Following these principles, we produce high-quality productions across a wide range of genres for children and young people that are performed throughout Japan. More precisely, the “Nissay Masterpiece Series,” which invites children to a variety of stage performances, continues at the Nissay Theatre and in various locations throughout Japan. Through this initiative, we sincerely hope that children across the country will appreciate and enjoy our performances and develop aesthetic sensitivity and diverse values to become empathetic adults with sound minds and hearts.

We will further enhance our activities, including the “Nissay Theatre Family Festival,” a long-cherished summer event for families, the “Nissay Opera,” an initiative we have worked on since the opening of the theater to promote opera throughout Japan, and “The Nissay Opera for Young Audiences,” an out-of-school class for junior and senior high school students to enjoy opera performances.

We will continue to make our best efforts to ensure that the Nissay Theatre will continue to be recognized as a place to create high-quality performing arts that nurture younger generations. We look forward to your continued understanding and support.”
